Description

Surface GripTreat

Clear Anti Slip Chemical Treatment for Slippery When Wet Surfaces.

Surface GripTreat is a water-based anti slip tile treatment solution specifically developed to treat the surface of ceramic and porcelain tile, concrete and other hard mineral surfaces.
It contains inorganic surface activators and polymers that react to form a transparent, anti-slip micro-structure, that does not change the appearance of the treated surface. For interior and exterior use.

When floors are wet from rain, liquid spills and splashes, routine cleaning or water tracking from outside, GripTreat anti-slip treatment is activated and immediately makes those surfaces skid and slip-resistant.

Why Is My Tile So Slippery?

There are two key reasons for this situation:

  • The texture or the surface characteristics of the tile.
  • Whether there are any contaminants on the tile.
If the tile is very smooth, or there’s nothing there to grip your foot (or the tire), you can easily slide around.
Obviously, if there are contaminants on the floor like water, food, chemicals, grease, oil or dust, etc., they can get under your foot (or under the tread of a tire) and cause you to slip.

Tile slipperiness can also depend on:

  1. The type of footwear you’re wearing
  2. The slope or inclination of the walkway
  3. The way you walk
  4. Your physical fitness
  5. Etc.

There are several factors that can contribute to a surface being slippery. But the two predominant ones are the texture or surface characteristics of the floor, and the contaminants present on the floor.

If you can control these causes, we can minimize floor slipperiness significantly.

What Is Surface GripTreat?

GripTreat is a chemical treatment you can apply to a hard surface or walkway to increase it’s slip-resistance. It’s a safe and effective way of meeting national safety standards. It’s also a long-lasting treatment that requires minimal ongoing maintenance.
It will chemically modify the surface at a microscopic level, to increase the depth of its pores. As a result, when water or contaminants get on the surface, they have somewhere to go, instead of sitting there and creating an opportunity for accidents to occur.
Additionally, the surface pores will grip your feet (or the tire) instead of causing aqua-planing or slipping across the surface.

How To Apply Surface GripTreat?

Applying Surface GripTreat is a three-step process.

Please note:

Before you do anything, we recommend you test GripTreat on a tiny surface space off to the side to make sure everything works well.
Assuming the test area looks ok, proceed to clean the surface using our SurfaceClean product. Apply it easily with a mop or pump-up sprayer. Afterward, clean off the surface and let it dry.
Once dry, apply the GripTreat to your surface using a pump-up sprayer or a lamb’s wool applicator.
Apply it for 8 to 10 minutes. It’s important that the surface doesn’t dry out. So, periodically add some more of the product, or agitate the surface so that it doesn’t dry out.
After the 8 to 10 minutes, then you need to neutralize the surface. To do this, simply mop or spray the SurfaceClean product on the floor again.
Finally, you can rinse off SurfaceClean and re-open your floor for use. This is a very quick and effective way of treating the surface.

What Ongoing Maintenance Is Required?

After using Surface GripTreat, your floor will become very easy to maintain, for a long period of time. As long as the surface pores – which the product has deepened and modified – don’t get clogged up, it will remain effective.
As a result, we recommend using cleaners that remove oils, dirt, fat or grease that can seep in and clog up those pores. Our Emerald Enzyme Cleaner and Maintainer is a good solution. It’s a microbial cleaner that’s very cost-effective, and very powerful.
Only 1 or 2 ounces is needed per gallon of water, and it will leave the surface without any residue.

Can You Use This On Glossy Tiles?

You need to be careful using Surface GripTreat on glossy tiles. It will reduce the sheen.
It has a low pH, which can reduce the shine of glossy tiles. So, if that’s important to you, we recommend using one of our other products like GlazeGuard Plus, or our Tile SlipShield.
Surface GripTreat is very effective on non-glossy tiles, or exterior tiles, stone and concrete where the sheen is not an issue.

Which Surfaces Respond Well To Surface GripTreat?

This product was designed to work best on a mineral-based surface. Something like concrete tile, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, natural stone, or Terrazzo.
It won’t work on non-mineral surfaces. So this product will not be appropriate for metal or wood floors.
On a mineral surface, GripTreat can chemically react with, modify at a microscopic level, and increase the friction and surface co-efficient.

Can I Use It On Interior Or Exterior Floors?

This product works very well on both interior and exterior surfaces. We strongly recommend it for exterior use. This is where surfaces receive the most exposure to moisture and damp conditions for long periods of time.
Commercial areas where it performs extremely well include:
Residential situations where GripTreat will really shine include:

How Can I Make My Epoxy Floor Less Slippery?

Surface GripTreat is not recommended for epoxy floors. This product works best on mineral-based surfaces. With that said, CoverTec manufactures 2 solutions for increasing the traction on an epoxy coated surface. For heavy duty applications, or larger more heavy foot or tire traffic areas, our GlazeGuard Plus is perfect for increasing slip-resistance for consumers, customers or workers. For medium to low duty applications, such as a convenience store, small apartments and homes, you can use our Tile SlipShield. Both of these products bond very well to the epoxy and protect against slip and fall accidents.

How To Make Tile Shower Floors Less Slippery?

GripTreat is a very effective way of making shower surfaces slip-resistant. It’s a 3-step process involved:
We strongly recommend the third step of neutralizing the floor with something as powerful as our SurfaceClean. The process takes about about 45 minutes. It modifies the surface of the tile microscopically so that instead of you aquaplaning or sliding across it, you’ll experience more of a suction effect. This makes it difficult for someone to slip when using it.
Maintaining the floor after the process is also simple. Simply keep it clean by using a high quality cleaner like our Emerald Enzyme-Based Cleaner.

Application

GripTreat is Ready to Use. Clean the surface thoroughly using SurfaceClean to remove all dirt, grease and debris. Always test product in an inconspicuous area before applying.
Apply using an applicator, soft brush, mop or low-pressure sprayer. Caution use a spray device that will not create heavy misting or over-spray. Make sure GripTreat is spread evenly across the entire surface to be treated. Do not pour directly on the surface. It may be necessary to divide large areas into smaller sections for effective application.
After GripTreat has been evenly distributed, agitate the solution for 1 minute using soft scrub brush to create a soapy surface. After waiting 2 minutes brush the entire surface again. The reaction should be discontinued by flushing the surface thoroughly, with SurfaceClean. After 8 minutes in the case on tile and after 10 minutes in the case of stone surfaces.

Installation Guidelines

GripTreat contains a blend of mild acids. Use rubber gloves and safety goggles. When using a pressure sprayer for application, avoid breathing the mist or getting the spray on yourself.
Although GripTreat contains only mild acids it may discolor metal fixtures and shower panel tracks. These should be protected with blue tape or with a drop cloth.

Coverage

1 Gallon of GripTreat will cover approximately 400 to – 600 sq. ft. depending upon porosity of surface.
